Puncher Clynch holds on gamely to win the Ballysax Stakes Gr3.

Sinndar scores a four-timer and Azamour sires first Group winner. Azamour’s first-crop son Puncher Clynch offered his Gilltown-based sire a first Group victory on Sunday when taking the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown. The progressive colt stuck gamely to his task in the final stages of the ten furlong contest to score by a short head from Ballydoyle duo At First Sight and Mikhail Glinka. Winning trainer Jim Bolger was impressed with his progressive charge who was lifting his fourth career success in seven starts. “He's a very versatile type as he gets a mile and a half and he could be dropped back to nine furlongs.” No immediate plans have been announced for Puncher Clynch following this Classic trial victory.

Sinndar has enjoyed a prolific period with four winners to his name over recent days. Consistent three-year-old Gertrude Bell opened her account on her seasonal debut when successful in the Robert Sangster Memorial Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at Newbury on Friday. The John Gosden-trained filly had previously finished second and third in her juvenile outings. His Highness the Aga Khan’s Haralan was the easy winner of the 1 mile 6 furlong Pinewood Handicap at Leopardstown on Sunday. The lightly-raced four-year-old gelding was making only his third career start and recorded his second success. He could well be a useful stayer in the making.

In France, where Sinndar is based at the Haras de Bonneval, the sire was in winning ways thanks to Idothea. The Niarchos family’s filly lost her maiden tag in an eleven furlong contest at Durtal after taking two third places also in the French provinces. Sinndar’s fourth victory came in Italy, from his five-year-old daughter Bachata who won a ten and a half furlong handicap at Varese.
