Juvenile Carazam opens sire’s account with debut success. Champion racehorse Azamour got off the mark as a stallion yesterday evening in Ireland as his son Carazam took the Thomastown Castle Stables Median Auction Maiden at Tipperary. The Tommy Stack-trained colt was sent off hot favourite for the seven and a half furlong contest, despite this being his first racecourse appearance. Carazam’s inexperience showed at the start of the race, where he lost considerable ground when slow to leave the stalls. He nevertheless rejoined the field without much difficulty and then pulled away from his rivals in the final furlong, winning by a length and a half.

Azamour did not race himself until winning his maiden in the September of his juvenile season and then went on to lift the Gr 2 Beresford Stakes a month later. He took the St James’s Palace Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes at three after being placed in both English and Irish 2000 Guineas and then became champion older horse at four with victories in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

Eight juveniles from the stallion’s first crop have raced to date, with half of these finishing in the first four. The son of Night Shift and Listed-winning Lear Fan mare Asmara stands at Gilltown Stud for a fee of 15,000€.
