A new yearling record for Siyouni. Just days after Siyouni’s Prix du Jockey Club winning son Sottsass took an excellent third place in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Haras de Bonneval sire enjoyed great results at Newmarket’s premier Tattersalls Book 1 sale. The leading French sire signed a new record yearling price of 1.3 million Guineas for lot 208, a half-brother to Magna Grecia, winner of the Group 1 Futurity Trophy Stakes and this year’s 2000 Guineas. The colt, who represents the same cross as Sottsass, out of a Galileo mare, was snapped up by MV Magnier. His vendor, Noreland Stud’s Harry McCalmont who was consigning him on behalf of his breeder Robert Scarborough, commented, “Like Magna Grecia, he has a very good temperament which is hugely important. This horse is exceptionally athletic. I think there’ll be a lot more Galileo mares going back to the stallion now.”

Siyouni also saw another beautifully-bred colt, lot 159, a half-brother to Group scorers Sir Patrick Moore, Nyaleti and Stellar Path, raise a bid of 800,000 Guineas from Angus Gold on behalf of Shadwell Estate. He explained, “I just loved him, I thought he was one of the best yearlings here all week.”

In all, ten yearlings by Siyouni changed hands for a total of 4.14 million Guineas and an excellent average of 414,000 Guineas for youngsters conceived at a covering fee of 45,000 Euros, making him the fourth leading sire of the sale by average.

Sea The Stars proved popular as ever and 22 yearlings by the Arc winner met with success in the ring, for a total of 6.835 million Guineas and an average of 310,682 Guineas. Seven yearlings by the Gilltown Stud sire reached or exceeded the half-million Guinea barrier and they were headed by lot 413, the son of a Listed-winning Monsun mare, from the family of Lando, who will join Godolphin after being bought for 875,000 Guineas. Consigner Diego Romeo of Longview Stud remarked, “We love him. He is bred on the very good cross of Sea The Stars over Monsun that produced Sea The Moon.”

Godolphin also spent 725,000 Guineas on lot 268, a son of Sea The Stars hailing from the magnificent Aga Khan Studs maternal line of champion filly Ebadiyla. Gerard Lowry of Oneliner Stables completed a successful pinhook with the colt and he declared, “He had that wow factor as a foal. I’m just delighted that Anthony Stroud, Sheikh Mohammed and Charlie Appleby have bought him and I hope he becomes a champion for them. He is a pure racehorse. He’s from a champion’s pedigree, you’re looking at the “E” Aga Khan pedigree which throws up a good horse every year.”

The two Book 1 yearlings from the first crop of dual Derby hero Harzand, by Sea The Stars, generated a good deal of interest with lot 178, a half-sister to Group 3 winner Amazing Lips, selling for 130,000 Guineas to agent Richard Knight. Lot 114, a colt out of the half-sister to Australian Group 1 scorer I’m Your Man, knocked down to Highflyer Bloodstock for 80,000 Guineas. The Gilltown Stud sire will be represented next week by several yearlings in the Tattersalls Books 2 and 3 sales.
