Emotional win for Kizlyar connections at Royal Ascot

Aga Khan graduate Kizlyar scored an emotional victory for his new connections in the Ascot Stakes on day one of the Royal meeting.

...

Margaret Heffernan, who heads up the winning owners HOS Syndicate, lost her husband Andrew just three months ago.

"Today is special because I lost my husband 12 weeks ago," said Heffernan. "This was his week and the idea of a syndicate for the grandchildren was really his. He believed in it and believed in Joseph [O’Brien, trainer] so much.

"He would have been absolutely thrilled.”

Joseph O’Brien said: “Kizlyar is off the back of a good win last time. We didn't get into the Fred Winter, unfortunately. This was obviously the next target for him, and I'm delighted to win such a good race with him.

...

"I feel like Kizlyar had a little extra push in the final 100 yards. It looked like Defiantly maybe had outbattled him at one stage, but he battled back hard in the final furlong.

"He might be one to go abroad with – we'll see what the handicapper does and go from there."

Kizylar was sold at last year’s Arqana Summer Sale, where he was purchased by Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock for €110,000. He has since won two races for his new connections and has also placed over hurdles at Punchestown.

The Aga Khan Studs are consigning five horses to this year’s sale, which takes place on 1st July. Click here to see photos and videos of the draft.
