The first two races on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood were won by horses out of mares bred and sold by the Aga Khan Studs.

One of the highlights of the day was the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes, and it was won by Zavateri, whose dam Zeroua was sold at the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale in 2021. The unbeaten colt had already picked up the Gr.2 July Stakes at Newmarket two weeks earlier and now has Group 1 races in his sights.

Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton said: "I don't see why he won't keep improving, either. Have you seen the backside on him? He has a great engine and he's an absolute joy to have.

"He’s just so tough, he had to win his race twice. He went to win it and then William [Buick, rider of second-placed Morris Dancer] came at him, so he had to win it again. He just amazes me, he’s such a dude and a lovely horse. He cut through the pack like a knife through butter."

Zeroua

Zavateri was bred by John Gunther together with his daughter Tanya. They purchased Zeroua – who is by Siyouni out of a daughter of Zarkava - via Avenue Bloodstock for €90,000.

“It’s a great pedigree. I always loved Zarkava; when she won the races she won she was just unbelievable,” said John Gunther. “To have her in that pedigree is really something. When we saw [Zeroua] at the sale in France we were amazed we got her for the price we got her at. I thought she’d sell for quite a bit more so we were really excited about buying her. Sometimes you get lucky.”

Zavateri is the third Group winner for Siyouni as a broodmare sire in June/July, following fellow two-year-old Moojeed and three-year-old Sayidah Dariyan.

The first race on the card, the Chesterfield Cup Handicap, was won by Westridge by a ready three and a quarter lengths. The son of Blue Point is out of Embiyra, who sold at Goffs November Sale in 2016.
