Karasi, a 12 year old gelding by Kahyasi out of Karamita, scored an unprecedented third straight victory in the $1,481,000 Nakayama Grand Jump, the world’s richest steeplechase, in Japan on Saturday.
Karasi, trained by Eric Musgrave and bred by the Aga Khan Studs, was formerly trained in the UK by Sir Michael Stoute, where he won three races before being purchased for 95,000 gns by Kern Lillingston Associates at the 1998 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training.
He continued racing on the flat for his new owners in Australia, winning the 2001 Geelong Cup and placing fourth in the 2001 Melbourne Cup. Karasi is the winner of 16 races on the flat and over the jumps. His career earnings are now above $3.5 million. Karasi was also Australia’s top jumper in 2005 and 2006. On the same day, Kahyasi was also responsible of Gr.1 Aintree Hurdle third Afsoun.
A proven flat sire with five Group 1 winners to his name, Kahyasi has already sired the winners of 29 races since the start of 2007. This season he is responsible for the recent Gr.3 Prix Penelope third, Topka, as well as the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt runner up and Gr.3 Prix Exbury winner, Pearl Sky.
2025 has been another successful year for the connections of mares bred and sold by the Aga Khan Studs. No fewer than four Group 1 winners have flown the flag worldwide – including two high-profile juveniles.
