Families that flourish on the international stage

2025 has been another successful year for the connections of mares bred and sold by the Aga Khan Studs. No fewer than four Group 1 winners have flown the flag worldwide – including two high-profile juveniles.

Zavateri

In the UK, Zavateri shone in the top juvenile contests throughout the year, winning the Gr.2 July Stakes, the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes and the Gr.1 National Stakes, as well as finishing fourth in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes. He is the first foal from his dam Zeroua, a daughter of Siyouni from the family of Zarkava sold in 2021.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Irish raider Balantina stormed to success in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Her dam Balankiyla sold in the same year as Zeroua, just before her daughter Baiykara - retained by the Aga Khan Studs – updated her pedigree by becoming a Group winner.

Also in the USA, Dynamic Pricing (out of Shemda) scored in the Gr.1 Just A Games Stakes, while in Australia Royal Patronage (out of Shaloushka) won the Gr.1 Canterbury Stakes.

In recent years the Aga Khan Studs have also sold half-sisters to such subsequent high-profile winners as Calandagan, Ezeliya, Rouhiya, Mandanaba, Rayevka, Rayif and Samangan.

Azama

This year, 21 Aga Khan homebred fillies and mares will go through the ring at the Goffs November Sale and 31 at the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale in December.

At Goffs, the draft includes Azama, a daughter of Sea The Stars and dam of 3 winners including two Stakes performers, sold in foal to Zarak; Harasiya, the Group winning grandam of Group 1 winner Big Rock; Rehana, a Group winning half-sister to the dam of 2025 Group 1 performers Rayif and Rayevka; and Zarshana, another Group winner and proven producer by Sea The Stars who is a half-sister to Zarkava.

There is also a selection of well-bred fillies in and out of training, with five winners among them including Etawa, a daughter of Kingman from the family of Ezeliya who has won since the catalogue was printed.

Samangan

The Arqana draft includes high-profile mares Siyenica, a Stakes winning half-sister to Siyouni and dam of Group 1 winner Siyarafina; Vazira, a Group 1 winning daughter of Sea The Stars; Veda, a Classic-placed daughter of Dansili who has already produced Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Valia; and Darousha, a half-sister to Arc hero Daryz.

The consignment of fillies includes six winners, with Edrosa (Sea The Stars) a new winner after the catalogue was printed. They are joined by Rodanya, a half-sister to 2024 Gr.1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Rouhiya; Ervalya, a half-sister to Erevann out of three-time Group 1 winner Ervedya; and Samibaya, whose two-year-old half-brother Samangan was a Group 2 winner this year.
