Dalakhani sailed through his trial for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe yesterday afternoon, when running out the effortless winner of the Group II Prix Niel at Longchamp. Ridden in second last position until the entrance to the straight, Dalakhani put up a seamless performance to overtake his rivals in a matter a strides. Tackled by Doyen one and a half furlongs out, Dalakhani quickened again under a hands and heels ride from Christophe Soumillon, and passed the post one and a half comfortable lengths ahead of Doyen, with Epsom Derby winner Kris Kin a further two and a half lengths behind in third place.

Connections were delighted with the performance of Dalakhani, already winner of three Group I races, including the Prix du Jockey-Club. His Highness the Aga Khan commented: “The first race back in the Autumn after a break is always a delicate situation, but was perfectly negotiated by Alain de Royer Dupré and his team. I would not be concerned about soft ground in the Arc, but I would be if it was heavy.” Trainer Alain de Royer Dupré said: “I had no concerns beforehand and he showed he has lost none of his sparkle,” while jockey Soumillon added: “He had plenty left in the tank.”

Dalakhani’s victory prompted a very good day for the Aga Khan Studs, including a Group double for Darshaan, who also sired Group I Prix Vermeille winner Mezzo Soprano. French based Kahyasi was also the sire of Group III Prix Gladiateur winner Darasim later in the afternoon.
