Harzand achieved a remarkable feat in winning both the Blue Ribbon of the Turf the Gr I Epsom Derby and Gr I Irish Derby in 2016. In doing so, he became only the 18th horse to complete this Derby double in 151 years and H.H. the Aga Khan’s fifth dual Derby winner.
Harzand won four consecutive races in four months, winning by 16 lengths on his seasonal debut before taking the Gr III Ballysax Stakes over 10 furlongs, en route to two back to back Group I victories at Epsom and the Curragh, showing class and courage.
Harzand is a son of the champion Sea The Stars, who is currently one of the leading European sires. In 2016, he was the sire of 12% Stakes winners to runners from his first four crops, a ratio bettered only by Dubawi at the same stage in their careers.
Harzand’s dam Hazariya is a Group III winner over 7 furlongs (1400m). He is a brother to three Stakes performers, including Gr III winning juvenile Harasiya, also 3rd Moyglare Stud Stakes Gr 1, from the immediate family of Group 1 winner SEAL OF APPROVAL and dual Group I winning 2yo HITTITE GLORY.
88 of the mares covered by Harzand are either Stakes performers, the dams of Stakes performers, sisters to Stakes performers or out of Stakes performers, including the dam of Zarkava.
