A great racehorse retires to stud

Azamour finished his illustrious racing career an unlucky 3rd in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Belmont Park

on Saturday night. John Oxx lauded his talents by comparing him to

"...top horses like Sinndar and Alamshar, and this fella ranks up there with them."

Mick Kinane, speaking before Azamour's final run last week, also acknowledged the high regard he holds Azamour in,

" I have never been so close to a horse in my career...he's a character of a horse...a very honest and genuine one."

Having lost a decent position early on to settle close to the rear of the field, Azamour got held up behind Bago entering the final straight and couldn't show his customary burst of acceleration to cut clear of the field, staying on well to finish within 2 lengths of the winner.

He currently leads the World Racing Championship standings and retires to Gilltown as the highest rated older horse in Europe.
