Azamour retires to Gilltown

Saturday 1 October 2005

Europe’s top rated older horse Azamour, owned and bred by His Highness the Aga Khan,

will retire to Gilltown Stud at the end of this season.

Winner of the Group 2 Beresford Stakes as a 2 year old, Azamour went on to win the Group 1 St. James’s Palace Stakes and the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes as a 3 year old. He more than justified the decision to keep him in training as a 4 year old when winning the Royal Ascot Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at York in June in emphatic style, and proved his versatility by putting in a sparkling performance to win what was a high class renewal of the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

Pat Downes, Manager of Gilltown Stud, said “ Azamour is an outstanding racehorse with immense physical presence, who has won at the highest level over a mile, a mile and a quarter, and a mile and a half. He will be a wonderful addition to our stallion roster.”
