Dabiroun wins Akilak 3rd at Cheltenham

Tuesday 22 March 2005

Horses bred by the Aga Khan Studs were a prominent force at last week’s Cheltenham Festival.

Dabiroun was the prize performer winning the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle by an impressive eight lengths on the opening day of the meeting.

His trainer Paul Nolan commented after the easy win: “he’s been a revelation on this better ground and, on this going, he’s as good as he works”.

While on Friday Akilak showed determination to finish third in the Triumph Hurdle. His trainer Howard Johnson reported after the race: “the ground went against him. He must have some juice in the ground and, unfortunately, it dried up too much for him, but he still ran well.”

Both Dabiroun and Akilak were sold out of John Oxx’s stable at last year’s Goffs Ireland October Horses in Training sale. They were sold for €20,000 and €100,000 respectively.
