The Aga Khan Studs are sorry to announce the loss of DALTAWA, dam of two Classic winners and a matriarch of the modern era. The grey daughter of Miswaki passed away recently at the age of 26 years old, at the Haras de Saint-Crespin in Normandy.

DALTAWA incarnated the essence of the Aga Khan Studs breeding operation. She excelled in the paddocks after a successful career on the track in 1991 and 1992, when her two victories for trainer Alain de Royer Dupré included a success in the Listed Prix Ronde de Nuit, and a second place in the Gr.3 Prix Pénélope.

DALTAWA immediately made her mark at stud, with her first offspring being the globetrotting seven-time Group 1 winner DAYLAMI. This son of Doyoun, whose racing highlights came in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Turf, is a proven sire, producer of Group 1 winners under both codes.

Current Gilltown Stud stallion DALAKHANI is without doubt DALTAWA’s best offspring, and this son of Darshaan was a Group 1 winner as a juvenile before going on to lift the Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The sire of seven Group 1 winners, DALAKHANI is now making his name as a broodmare sire.

In addition to the two champions DALAKHANI and DAYLAMI, DALTAWA’s male progeny features Listed and Group 3 winner Dalghar (Anabaa) and Group 1 placed Daymarti (Caerleon).

The heritage also lives on strongly through her female produce, as DALTAWA is a direct ancestor of Group 1 winners Dalkala (Giant’s Causeway) and DOLNIYA (Azamour). The former, a great granddaughter of DALTAWA and daughter of Group 3 victrix Daltaya (Anabaa), secured the 2013 Prix de l’Opéra. She subsequently joined the Aga Khan broodmare band and gave birth to her first foal this year, a filly by Dubawi. After a first success at the highest level in the Gr.1 Sheema Classic at Meydan in March, DOLNIYA continues to build upon her roll of honour, with placings in the Gr.1 Coronation Cup and Gr.1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
