The pre-training stables at Gilltown Stud

The Irish based Aga Khan horses in training are based with John Oxx and Michael Halford. The former is a second generation Curragh trainer based at Currabeg stables, just 10 minutes away from Gilltown Stud. A qualified vet, John Oxx has been one of the leading trainers in Ireland since taking over the reins from his father in 1979. His numerous Group I successes include the magnificent performances of Sinndar in 2000 and Alamshar in 2003, (now at the Irish National Stud), and of course Azamour.

In November 2006, Michael Halford was sent his first batch of Aga Khan yearlings. This former amateur rider has established himself as a reliable producer of winners in Ireland and he is a valuable addition to the Aga Khan trainers. He trained his first winner for the Aga Khan on 30th November 2007 when Dirar won a 6 furlong race at Dundalle.

Some Aga Khan yearlings are also broken in at Sheshoon Stud and pre-trained at Gilltown. They are long reined and ridden away using the 100 acre field and its peat gallop, before being sent into training with their respective trainers in Ireland or France.
