The strength of the mighty broodmare band developed
by the Aga Khan and his family during the last century has never
been more apparent, both on the track and in the sales ring.
In 2005 the Aga Khan Studs’ home-bred Azamour won
The King George & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and the Prince
of Wales’s Stakes, while Sinndar’s daughter Shawanda
scored runaway victories in the Irish Oaks and Prix Vermeille.

While in 2007 Irish bred Zarkava took the Prix Marcel Boussac in breathtaking style and was subsequently rated the top 2yo filly in Europe.
The Irish broodmare band is kept to about 100 females, as the EBN noted:
“The Aga Khan is a very good man to buy from. He
culls regularly … he is inevitably going to part with
a mare who may come up trumps for another breeder, or one whose
pedigree may suddenly read significantly better by reason of
a major success in the family by a horse he has retained.” European
